About Mount Tremper Arts
Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, just over two hours from New York City, Mount Tremper Arts supports contemporary artists in the creation and presentation of new works of art. Founded by photographer Mathew Pokoik and choreographer Aynsley Vandenbroucke, MTA fosters an environment of creative risk taking and intellectual curiosity. It does this through an integration of performances, exhibitions, artist residencies, educational programming, and informal gatherings.
Why both visual and performing arts?
The simple answer is that Mathew is a photographer and Aynsley is a choreographer and our curating grows out of our own work-- out of questions we're asking and people whose work we are following. But more than that, we are truly interested in the ways that art forms inform one another. At MTA we offer distinct mediums under one roof. We are interested in what emerges when different forms and different projects meet. It's not so unlike our marriage...
Why a contemporary arts center in the Catskill Mountains?
We are dedicated to supporting both the solitude of making artistic work and the community needed to share it. The mountains invite a sense of time and space that is different from New York City. Something happens when artists have access to beautiful and private workspace and playtime. Work develops in the studio and around the fire. A different sense of community grows. Rich discussions and questions emerge for artists and audience members alike.
