Kate McGinnis - Audience Review of Liz Sargent Installations

Mt Tremper Arts is nestled in the heart of New Yorks Catskill mountains. I arrived to breath taking views of the landscape.
Upon entering and removing my shoes I noticed a large shiny box. Once I was in the studio I strolled around to view the art exhibit. Everyone there was relaxed and intrigued by what was in the room. At the other end of the room was a video installation.
The first piece was Revealing by Liz Sargent, performed by Marcia Johnson. Many questions and thoughts came to mind as I watched this piece. The audience was encouraged to walk around and view this installation from all sides. It made me wonder who each of us actually sees when we look in a mirror? And what kind of box do we put ourselves into? The piece progressed to the point of the entire box and performer becoming covered with white and black paint. The images the paint created and the actual action of it being strewn inside the box were mesmerizing.

The second piece was Installation #4 by Liz Sargent, performed by Djamila Moore, Kristen Warnick, and Aynsley Vandenbroucke.
At the back of the studio on the floor was a large white square marked with tape. Inside the square was a multitude of string hanging from the ceiling to the floor, with ferns scattered about. The lights went to black, and then you hear what sounds like drops of water. They are coming at different intervals from all around the room. The lights slowly come up and we can see three performers with in the white square. As the piece progresses I find myself wondering what my connection to the earth is and how fragile that connection may be.
The evening ended with a vocal performance by Einy Aam.
All and all it was a most enjoyable evening, with the audience invited to join the artists and performers for a fire side chat.
I currently live in Brooklyn and work as a scenic artist in the film industry. I have studied painting and theater. I love the outdoors. -Kate McGinnis
