First, let me say how lucky I feel to be living right around the corner from Mount Tremper Arts. We never dreamed that something this cool would pop up in our neighborhood. Thank you Aynsley and Matt!
I came to see the Brian Brooks Moving Company predisposed to enjoy it, based on the Deborah Jowitt review from the Village Voice. The experience surpassed my expectations. What a terrific young group -- musical, rhythmic, energetic, precise and humorous. It was right up my alley -- I think I smiled though the whole program. Loved how the lighting design was integral to the overall artistic vision.
Brian Brooks Moving Company, Rapid Still, at Mount Tremper Arts
The program began with a short video of Mr. Brooks in solo, animated to comical and touching effect as he battles gravity and mostly wins. He then walked out and performed another lively solo. These were tasty appetizers for the excellent meal to come. "Hands (From Pinata)" was danced to Ravel's Bolero, by four of the five company members wearing black Flamenco-inspired dresses, standing in formation around a set of footlights, moving almost exclusively from the waist up -- dancing hands. I loved it -- It made me wish to see the rest of "Pinata"! The last piece was "Rapid Still", billed as a work-in-progress. What a delight. I loved how it built on the playful theme of bodies bouncing and careening off of and over one another. Dashing, hurtling, tossing each other about with great musicality and zest. The flying woman was sublime, and the ending subtle and just right.
On the short drive home, the skies opened up and I rode in the pounding rain, loudly singing "Bolero" along with the steady beat of windshield wipers and cymbal crashes of thunder.
Looking forward to the next event!
