Within one month in 2009, three Greats of Dance died. The U.S. Premiere of the choreographic comedy Pina Jackson in Mercemoriam evokes the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, the Queen of Tanztheater, Pina Bausch, and the Emperor of Dance Revolution, Merce Cunningham in a triple “humoriscritic” and vivifying tribute.
Born Frédéric Gafner in Geneva in 1969, Foofwa d’Imobilité danced with Germany’s Stuttgart Ballet and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company before starting his own work and founding the Geneva-based association Neopost Ahrrrt in 2000. Foofwa has won several international dance competitions and has performed around the world, notably at the Paris Opera, the Fenice Theater in Venice, Italy, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. www.foofwa.com
Press: “Foofwa... remains the kind of performer to whom I tentatively apply the word “genius.” How does he do what he does? What was it he just did? You watch in stupefaction.”
Alistair Macaulay, The New York Times
“He is a thrill to watch... After seeing Foofwa, it may be hard to believe in traditional modern dance as anything but a succession of empty postures."
Tom Phillips, danceviewtimes
