History

After several years of incubation, Mount Tremper Arts (MTA) opened in 2008 as a laboratory space dedicated to supporting artists in the creation and presentation of new works of contemporary art – and building a community that allowed artists to support each other.

The first public season included a 7-week Summer Festival along with artistic residencies throughout the year. Later, the focus of the organization evolved to center almost solely on residencies through the Watershed Lab, providing time and space for artists to create, and partnering with New York City-based arts organizations to ensure “downstream” artistic support as well. From the first, MTA nurtured dialogue, artistic risk-taking, and inquiry in an environment that gave artists the freedom and support to move forward in their own process.

Since MTA’s first season, we’ve hosted over 250 residencies for performing arts companies as well as 135 public events, and supported a broad range of emerging to internationally renowned artists working in dance, theater, music, poetry, opera, criticism, and the visual arts.
